The latest issue of Wesley House’s online open-access, peer-reviewed journal – Holiness – is out now!

This is the first of two special edition centenary issues which seek to celebrate 100 years of theological leadership, fellowship and excellence.

The journal offers a range of scholarship that formed part of Wesley House’s centenary events and articles and sermons beyond it. From Paul Chilcote’s excellent survey of the current state of the global Methodist communion in ‘Mapping Global Methodist Theology’, to Paul Glass’ intimate retelling of the ‘Story of Wesley House’. From Ruby Quantson-Davis’ pertinent treatment on the importance of ‘Sitting with the Discomfort of Decolonisation’, to Jane Leach’s deeply personal consideration of ‘A Century of Theological Reflection’ in Cambridge.

Church of England Awards

Church of the Year Awards
The Church of the Year awards took place on the 6th November 2023 in London.  Revd Chris Jackson attended on behalf of the West Devon Circuit, at the awards Providence Chapel won the Open for Visitors award and then went on to win the overall UK award in the same category… not bad for a tiny Chapel on dartmoor !

We are seeking to appoint a Chaplain to join our team at Shebbear College. Applications are welcome form ordained or lay candidates who feel they can fulfil this key pastoral role within the college community. The Chaplain works closely with the Head, Senior Leadership team and pastoral and wellbeing staff within the college to ensure pupils and staff have a high level of pastoral support. The Chaplain should have a pastoral ease and wisdom which commends itself to working alongside young people, college staff and parents and there must be a willingness to be wholly involved in the College community.
Shebbear College is a Methodist Church foundation. Its governing body is accountable to the Methodist Conference. The school, in promoting its Christian values and ethos, welcomes among its staff and pupils of all faiths and none; an appreciation of the value of a broad approach to spirituality is therefore important. By being visible and proactively available the Chaplain provides the wisdom, judgement and sound common sense of a Christian leader within a school setting.
It is not possible to outline a complete list of duties and actions to be undertaken by the Chaplain but he or she is expected to adopt flexible working patterns, which meet the needs of the whole college community. Additionally, there must be acknowledgement of the round-the-clock demands that some boarding pupils can make.
This appointment is made within the terms of reference of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust policy on School Chaplains and the relevant sections of the document adopted by the Trust are applicable. If the successful candidate is a Methodist Minister then the stationing will be for five years.
Shebbear College is a relatively small (300 pupils from 4-18) co-educational independent day and boarding school set in 85 acres of North Devon countryside. The school benefits from the security and camaraderie of its membership of MIST (the Methodist Independent Schools Trust).
BENEFITS OF SERVICE
In addition to working in a small friendly school in a stunning rural location we will offer:
 A competitive remuneration package (basic stipend + 20% as announced by Methodist Conference)
 The opportunity (for the right candidate) to live in accommodation on the school site
 Free lunch and refreshments during term-time
 Health & Wellbeing Centre on site during term time
 Free use of the college facilities such as gymnasium
APPLICATION PROCESS
All applicants must complete the Shebbear College Application Form and Equal Opportunities Form. These forms are available on the School website (please ensure that your referees include your current or most recent employer and we do not accept CVs). The completed Application Form, covering letter (one side of A4) and Equal Opportunities Form should be sent via email (preferably) to the HR Department hr@shebbearcollege.co.uk or by post to:
