The Apple MAC runs on a base system very closely allied to Linux.
The Operating System and software are developed by communities of programmers and some people supported by some commercial firms and governments. India has a program of developing Linux software as have other developing countries who do not wish to be tied to expensive propriety systems.
Because of it's inherent security, being originally designed for networks of computers, and its smaller number of users, Linux is far less prone to Viruses than other, more well known, operating systems. Linux, generally will run faster on a lower specification computer. A Program layer for Linux called WINE allows the running of many programs designed for the main commercial operating system to run on a Linux computer.
