About the District
The Methodist Church in Great Britain covers from the Shetlands to the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands as well as the British mainland - and also Gibraltar and Malta.
The Plymouth and Exeter District is one of thirty-one districts and covers almost all of the county of Devon and about a third of Somerset, as well as small areas of Dorset and Cornwall. (click on the map for a new window with a full size map)
The District is made up of 230 churches in 17 circuits, with a total of around eight and a half thousand members and a wider community of about twenty thousand people. The area we cover stretches from Bude in Cornwall to the Huntspill River in Somerset on the north coast and from Lyme Regis to Torpoint on the south coast - and everything in between.
We are part of Churches Together in Devon, Somerset Churches Together and Churches Together in Cornwall. We work in partnership with other Christians throughout the area.
The Plymouth and Exeter District exists to support and encourage local circuits and churches to be missional communities blessing the people among whom they live.
The role of the District can be described as:
An enabler of the Church’s mission across the region, recognising that the majority of mission is done by local Christians and churches..
Serving as link local churches and circuits and the national Methodist Connexion.
Offering a structure which makes possible what cannot be achieved by circuits and churches alone.
Supporting ministry in all its forms.
Consulting with local circuits & churches to help them examine where they are and what they are capable of achieving by a rolling programme of Mission Visits from a District Team.
